Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I don't think I need glasses, so why should I have regular eye exams?
A. Regular eye exams are an important part of maintaining your ocular health, as well as the clarity of your vision. These eye exams can also help detect some of the early warning signs of glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal disorders, as well as systemic health issues.

Q. How old do you have to be to have an eye exam?
A. It is never too early to start caring for your eyes.  In fact, the AOA recommends eye exams at 6 months of age!

Q. Do I need to schedule an appointment to be seen?
A. Our office welcomes walk-ins during regular business hours, schedule permitting.  An appointment is recommended for first time contact lens patients, patients with special needs, and those who prefer shorter wait times to be seen.

Q. How long does it take for an eye exam?
A. A routine comprehensive eye exam usually takes anywhere between 40-75 minutes (the longer times are because it takes longer for the dilating drops to take effect). Patients who are interested in contact lenses, but have never worn them, should allow for additional time needed for training with insertion and removal.  More time should be alloted to browse our dispensary if you are interested in purchasing glasses.

Q. How old do you have to be to wear contact lenses?
A. Interestingly, there is no minimum age to start contacts. In fact, some of our most rewarding cases are with children. However, if you are under the age of 18, we do require that a parent or legal guardian be present for the initial visits. Of course, it is recommended that the patient be mature enough to handle the responsibilities that are associated with proper lens care.  Many of our youth are very successful with single use contact lenses as they lessen the problems associated with poor lens care and maintainence.  Don't forget to ask the doctor if lenses might be right for you.

Q. Do you accept any insurance plans?
A. Yes, we do accept several insurance plans, depending on your eligibility and benefit level at the time of service. We are not responsible if your plan declines coverage, so we suggest that you check with your individual plan prior to the visit.  Some of the plans that we accept include: Aetna, EyeMed, United HealthCare, EyeCare Plan of American (ECPA), Vision Care Advantage (VCA), Spectera, Medicare and VSP.

Q. What if you do not take my insurance, could I still be seen at your office?
A. Of course!  We would still be more than happy to provide you with outstanding service. Once the exam is completed, you would pay us in full for the services provided and we would give you an itemized receipt to submit to your carrier for possible re-imbursement.  If you are planning on doing this, we suggest that you check with your carrier prior to the visit.  Finally, considered Flex Spending as an alternative method of payment.

Q. Where could I get more eye care patient information?
A. Try the "All About Vision Website", as it has more than 450 pages of useful information.
